Kah San Chako Haws Honored as Modular Building of the Week by the Modular Building Institute!

Kah San Chako Haws | Portland, OR
Kah San Chako Haws, an innovative affordable community in southeast Portland, was recently honored by the Modular Building Institute as Modular Building of the Week. With a compelling story of how it came to be, we're proud to manage this community both for its forward-thinking take on affordable housing and the mission it serves.

With the growing need for affordable housing around the country, there is also an upswing in cost to build it. This means reduced funding and longer construction times. Kah San Chako Haws is a proposed solution to these problems. The first of its kind in the Pacific Northwest, time from design to finished construction was reduced from 18 months to 13 months. The entire 9-unit project was built for $1.7 million, translating into about $190,000 per unit. The community achieved LEED Gold certification thanks to its energy-efficient and environmentally friendly design.

Kah San Chako Haws was a community effort, bringing together partners from GRES, the Native American Youth Association (NAYA), and the Portland Housing Bureau. These partners came together to provide affordable housing choices to families in the Lents neighborhood, many of whom are Native American.
